It’s said that history is constructed by the victor — that in the aftermath of conflict, the defeated in many cases are portrayed as a collective, detestable mass that follows a similarly repulsive value system. Yet, though his Confederate Army was a student in the losing end of America’s Civil War, Robert E. Lee is remembered as one of the most celebrated generals in American history.
Rational ideas of armed conflict presume that defeated soldiers must be denounced, not exalted; punished, not praised; and despised, not admired. However, Lee is entirely of the latter. What made one man, one soldier, so special that he’s remembered by more Americans today than many of his victorious Union counterparts?
Unfortunately, this is the question that lots of volumes of books experienced trouble answering. And, I think which you have no desire (in this particular moment, a minimum of) you just read content of such depth and breadth (and I admit which i could not write it). Nonetheless, basically was required to describe the explanation for Lee’s appeal a single word, it could be “motivation.”
I am going to explore this theme in the context of the subsequent quote:
“There is scarcely anything that is correct that individuals cannot hope to accomplish by labor and perseverance. However the first have to be earnest as well as the second unremitting.”
Robert E. Lee
Earnest Labor
Today’s culture is certainly one through which immediacy is glorified — from your 24 / 7 news cycle; to tarts that “pop” one which just pour a glass of milk; to magic weight loss suppliments — such that you can actually forget that anything worth accomplishing takes earnest labor, that i would define being a serious and purposeful exertion of body, mind and spirit.
When ever business owners mention pouring their blood, sweat and tears inside their companies, they refer simply to earnest labor.
Once the craft of your famous musician or star athlete generally seems to look “easy,” it’s made so through earnest labor.
And, when I make an effort to achieve achieve of running a marathon, Let me agree to one principle: you got it right, earnest labor.
The ability to learn; the ability to improve; along with the strategies which goals are accomplished; are controlled through your capability to give your very best, and to accomplish that earnestly — without reservations (or even a magic pill).
Unremitting Perseverance
Lee fought a constant battle for much of the Civil War. His outnumbered and poorly-supplied army shrank daily because of desertions by disheartened soldiers. Yet, notwithstanding this, he fought vigorously before moment when defeat was imminent.
How frequently can we stop trying goals when things aren’t proceeding the same manner there was anticipated? Have you choose to stop smoking, but then learned you had a massive project due at the office, school, or elsewhere? Have you try creating a habit of getting up earlier in the morning, however slept in the next day and decided it had become a pointless exercise?
Lee has an answer for these, along with other, problems: unremitting perseverance, i would define as a steady, unshakable persistence in sticking to an option, belief, or purpose.
Once i train for and eventually run the marathon, I realize that there would have been a little voice inside my head telling me to prevent; who’s hurts a lot of to look a step further. However, my unremitting perseverance in following your challenge — all the way to the final line — will enable me to concentrate just to my footsteps against the pavement; the gentle breeze passing over my ears; along with the rhythm of my breathing — thus pushing that little voice in to the depths of my subconscious.
Nevertheless, robert e lee timeline; 4,560,000 is a perfect example that harboring unremitting perseverance doesn’t ensure victory. After all, he was defeated in war. Yet, during momentary failure, perseverance offers you the energy to acquire back in your metaphorical (or actual) horse and ride into battle (hopefully metaphorical) once more, pursuing your goals together with the knowledge that could basically be learned through setback.
It is said that history is written through the victor; and, in Lee’s case, it can be. In capturing the hearts of Americans, both through his military actions, his personal value system, and the sincere words of wisdom, Robert E. Lee is clearly victorious.
