Health and Immunization

There are no compulsory immunisations for travelers to Tajikistan though you should be current on Typhoid, Tetanus Polio as well as Hepatitis A. Malaria is present in some parts of Tajikistan which is why we advise you consult with your doctor or travel specialist about the proper vaccinations and preventative treatment.

Cultural Sensitivity

While on our trips, you will frequently interact with local people who have unique tradition and customs. We expect you to be respectful and considerate towards locals. Your guides and tour leaders are always able to guide you in the right direction.

The first thing you should know about traveling through Central Asia is that most areas, specifically the cities and towns, are much more relaxed attitude to Islam than their neighbors to the south in Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, it should also be noted that it is technically a Muslim region and therefore an extra dose of caution is recommended at certain locations. Although both women and men can wear shorts and T-shirts in cities, they should not be wearing T-shirts or sleeves that are long. But, those who visit active mosques should wear pants that are below the knees and wear tops that cover shoulders. Females should also be wearing their headscarf. On this trip, we will be exploring remote regions not often visited by tourists. Local people wear modest clothing, and it is expected that you’ll feel more at ease wearing conservative clothes.

Language and Religion

The official language of Tajikistan is Tajik. Russian is used in business and communications.

The majority of people are followers of Sunni Islam. A small percentage of people follow the religions of Russian Orthodox, Catholicism and Buddhism.

Food and beverages

The focus of this tour is soups and meats. In remote areas and at higher elevations, vegetables can be hard to come by. There are plenty of dried nuts and dried fruits to try though.

The alcohol choices are limited to beer and vodka. Anyone looking to sample something different – like Scotch or Gin is advised to purchase the alcohol duty-free and bring it along. It can be difficult to locate mixer drinks such as tonic water.
