A great idea to adorn formal water ponds can be a container of some kind, either empty or planted up. This can be as simple as ordinary clay plant-pot, stuffed with geraniums, or what you may can find or lug home from foreign parts. It is actually very easy to get some very attractive pots, even just in the tourist spots, at reasonable prices, and so long as they don’t exceed unwanted weight allowance, it will be definitely worth the effort of having them back.
One of my favourite gardens features a large Turkish coffee-pot, of beautifully greened copper, waiting the pool. It turned out rescued from a closing down cafe inside a country town and, despite its exotic looks, was quite definitely in your house on this Hampshire garden.
Some simple urns and pitchers can be used, placed on their side. Close to the pool, being a gentle fountain, with water pouring from the top, and returned, by some discreet piping and a submersible pump. The absolute right place to look for these include auctions, jumble sales, junk shops, etc. Even quite unpromising shapes can be used as the premise for the skills. Hideous colours could be painted over, ugly shapes could be utilized as armatures and built upon, etc.
For informal water garden ponds, there are many choices: plants, stones, boulders, pebbles, logs or various combinations of these, with aspects of turf as well as perhaps a bench, of some rugged sort, to ensure that one can possibly sit and meditate. This last, obviously, will be useful, in a more sophisticated shape, by the formal pool.
The irregular shaped water garden pond isn’t the location for statues, except just possibly an exceptionally strong-shaped abstract, more boulder-like than spiky. An appealing natural boulder or rock could look right, and so could a log or bit of driftwood. Anyone lucky enough to look for a large fossil, just like an ammonite, could check it out at the sea to ascertain if it looked happy, whilst the morbid might accept a cattle-skull within the Hostas.
Fountains tend not to belong here and besides, the Waterlilies don’t much care for moving water, although in the event the pool is large enough you could have water gurgling gently to the pool from the stream, natural or man-made, while planting waterlilies inside a calm patch at the other side.
